Here at The Nonantum Resort we pride ourselves on prioritizing sustainable practices and reducing our carbon footprint in as many ways as we can. The natural beauty of Maine is one of the primary reasons so many love to visit. We firmly believe that it is the responsibility of Mainers and visitors alike to take care of, and preserve, our environment. This page exemplifies just some of the ways The Nonantum Resort is facilitating the future of Maine by treating our state and earth with kindness.

Blackrock Farm

Blackrock Farm is the Nonantum’s newest addition to our sustainability portfolio. After years of tending our own onsite organic produce gardens, we were ready to grow our efforts and impact, quite literally. In Spring of 2022, an opportunity came to the table that has allowed us to expand our farms not only in square footage, but also in output and impact. In our pilot season, we have been able to grow enough produce for our guests, employees to use in their own kitchens, as well as share with local food banks right here in Kennebunkport. We are so excited for what the future holds at Blackrock Farm, grateful to have formed this collaboration, and know that it is just the beginning of the story.

Solar Powered

We feel so grateful to have the ability to choose solar when sourcing our energy needs here at the Nonantum Resort. As one of ten local businesses, we harvest the sun and use its natural power via a community grid in Rumford, Maine. This has a multiplicity of benefits including a cleaner energy source, lower environmental impact, and reduced cost to power our property. The Rumford farm will have an annual carbon offset equal to reducing 14,400,000 lbs. of emissions, 720,000 gallons of gasoline, and 313,043 trees planted!

We officially began receiving solar power in August of 2022, and will provide continued annual reporting on the environmental benefits from the program as we move forward. This is just the beginning!

Clean the world

The Nonantum Housekeeping team strives find the perfect harmony when choosing guest amenities that are eco-friendly and luxurious. Gone are the days where we have to trade one for the other! We are proud to use thoughtfully sourced personal care amenities that are recyclable, biodegradable, and plant-based. And that’s not even the end of the story…

We have also partnered with Clean The World, which sanitizes and repurposes leftover soap and shampoo to donate to communities in need. We take the extra steps to ensure that resources we have access to, ones that would normally get thrown away, are used for their highest and best purpose. Small changes can make big impacts, and with our Clean The World partnership, we can contribute to the overall health of communities who need it most.

Tayst

Continuing with the efforts to keep amenities sustainable, we have moved away from traditional coffee pods in favor of Tayst Coffee. Tayst produces 100% biodegradable coffee pods that are safe and eco-friendly. The coffee, as you can imagine by its name, is also a delicious brew – no need to sacrifice quality coffee here! Kind to the earth, Tayst allows us to save thousands of plastic cups from heading to a landfill a year.

Everybody Water

At The Nonantum we keep Everybody Water in our rooms as an amenity and we also sell it at our front desk as a replacement for plastic water bottles. Everybody Water is a women-owned company with a mission to change the lives of women and girls with water. Not only do they cut down on plastic waste, but the company’s goal is to bring clean water projects into people’s homes to give women and girls the freedom and time to attend school and earn income instead of collecting water.
