After Columbus Day, there aren’t quite as many visitors to Kennebunkport. But there are still plenty of reasons to come enjoy the off-season.
This year, the fall foliage has been unbelievable, with the colors lasting even through to November. Take a scenic walk or drive along Ocean Avenue and enjoy the serene views, the calm waters of the river and the crashing surf of the ocean.
The beaches are quiet, ideal for a refreshing walk along the water without the crowds. While you won’t see Barbara Bush and her dogs on the beach at this time of year (the Bushes have headed back to Texas for the winter), you’ll still see a number of dogs and their owners enjoying a daily walk. (In fact, there’s a whole book dedicated to them!: Gooch’s Pooches – The Dogs of Kennebunk Beach). Or visit nearby Goose Rocks Beach, which Yankee Magazine named one of the Prettiest Beaches in New England. On your way back, be sure to stop in Cape Porpoise, one of the most picturesque fishing villages in Maine. Take in the view of the lobster boats in the harbor and Goat Island Lighthouse, then dine at Pier 77 or enjoy a drink at The Ramp.

Head into Dock Square and Lower Village for some unique finds at the independent shops (no chain stores here!) Get a start on your holiday shopping, and browse the many art galleries along the way. Sample gourmet olive oils and balsamic vinegars at Maine-ly Drizzle. Learn about wines from a master sommelier at Down East Wine Imports. Stop in to Kennebunkport Brewing Co. for a tour and tasting of local Shipyard beers like Pumpkinhead and Prelude Ale. For other ideas of things to do during your stay, check out our Events Calendar.
Adding a festive feel and a warming touch to the cooler November weather are the holiday lights and decorations that begin to appear in Kennebunkport area shops and restaurants. After getting your eye’s fill, you can fill your tummy at the many fabulous area restaurants – from Bandaloop to Hurricane to Salt & Honey and beyond.
