Landmarks are part of what builds the character of a city or destination. When you’re on vacation, checking out these attractions is something you want to check off your bucket list, whether that means churches, statues, restaurants, and more. Make sure you don’t miss our landmarks and add these places on your list of things to things to do in Kennebunkport during your stay at Nonantum Resort.
Walker’s Point
Purchased by George H. W. Bush’s grandfather in the 1870s, Walker’s Point has been owned by the Bush family for decades. The famous stone and shingle home is the most well-known part of the house, but the “summer White House” of the Bushes also includes a tennis court, swimming pool, art studio, and many bedrooms. One of the most well-known things to do in Kennebunkport is to drive to the scenic overlook to get a big-picture view of the compound.
Goat Island Lighthouse
Visit the Goat Island Lighthouse by boat, or view it from the landing of Pier Road at Cape Porpoise. Most recently renovated in 2011 after the damage from a 1978 blizzard, the lighthouse is now restored to its original state with the walkway, bell tower, and keeper’s quarters. Check it out on the webcam for a sneak peek before you go.
Wedding Cake House
Although the Wedding Cake House is rarely open for tours, there’s a reason why it’s called the “most photographed house in the state.” Going to see its Carpenter Gothic architecture is unique enough even without seeing the insides, with the white buttresses and pinnacles against the yellow of the rest of the house. The shipbuilder George W. Bourne built the home. Rumor has it, Bourne assembled the home for his wife as an apology gift. The cause? Bourne had to leave on a trip almost as soon as they got married. If you’re interested in architecture and home design, visiting the Wedding Cake House is one of your best bets for things to do in Kennebunkport.
St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery Estate
Open from sunrise to sunset, St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery Estate has plenty of beautiful things to see along the Kennebunk River. Go into the Chapel of the Stations of the Cross, which is still an active church. Or, explore the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes or the Shrine of St. Anthony.
