Top 4 Breweries in Southern Maine

Kennebunkport hotelsIn the last ten years, craft beer has skyrocketed from a fun hobby to a nationwide phenomenon. Maine is widely considered a top ten American “beer state,” thanks in large part to the massive craft beer culture in nearby Portland. According to the Brewers Association, Maine has the nation’s third most breweries per capita. Our 21+ residents drink an average of ten gallons of craft beer per year, which ranks seventh nationally. Southern Maine is quickly growing into one of best brewing regions in the state, and the Nonantum Resort is less than 15 miles from four of the state’s best craft breweries. Kennebunkport hotels cannot match our oceanside locale, five-star dining, and coastal charm! Keep reading to learn the top four breweries in beautiful southern Maine.

Hidden Cove Brewing

Eight miles southwest of the Nonantum Resort, a brewery rests on the edge of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. From the outside, Hidden Cove Brewing Company resembles an insurance agency. Don’t be fooled by their modest building; this small town brewery slings delicious IPAs and unique barrel-aged brews. Gather around a repurposed whiskey barrel table and share a flight of their seasonal ales with friends. You can watch the Red Sox on the television or play a friendly game of shuffleboard. Their Patroon IPA has tropical fruit aromas and a crisp finish.

Banded Brewing

On the south side of the Saco River rests the charming village of Biddeford, an active beer community with three breweries within steps of each other. Thanks to a sensational rebranding campaign, Banded Brewing Company has quickly become one of Maine’s most popular craft breweries. Their new artistic can designs and fresh recipes have earned the trust of New England beer aficionados. Banded Brewing works out of an old warehouse factory. You can chill on their spectacular outdoor patio or play a game of Donkey Kong on their Super Nintendo. Hopheads will love their balanced Daikaiju DIPA, an evergreen and tropical medley. Their heavy stouts are especially amazing in the heart of winter.

Dirigo Brewing

Dirigo Brewing Company is 10 feet from a Saco River dam and only half of a mile down the road from Banded Brewing. The town of Biddeford is a scenic 12-mile drive from the Nonantum Resort. Dirigo has an unpretentious taproom with local art, a jukebox, and free popcorn. The exposed brick and restored wood is a nice touch, but their terrific 8.2% ABV Baltic Porter is worth the trip alone.

Funky Bow Brewery

A Maine craft brewery list isn’t complete without a mention of the Funky Bow Brewery, located in the woods near the small village of Lyman. The Funky Bow hosts authentic Maine backyard parties with live music, brick oven pizza, and tasty brews in their Biergarten. The beer is brewed in their family garage and sold in their makeshift beer tent. There is no better brewery experience during the summer months!

Kennebunkport Hotels

Barreled Souls Brewing and Tributary Brewing both earn honorable mentions, for those looking for even more craft beer. The Nonantum Resort is the ideal location for a southern Maine getaway because of our breathtaking ocean views, onsite events, world-class dining, and our charming accommodations. Even the most expensive Kennebunkport hotels cannot match our caring and experienced staff, onsite activities, and our enchanting lighthouse!
