Maine Chef of the Year 2014
Recently the Maine Restaurant Association awarded our Executive Chef Steve True the coveted Maine Chef of the Year Award. It was a fantastic night for the 38 Nonantum staffers that attended the Awards Banquet at The Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland. An amazing video was shared. Take a look here! Steve has been at The Nonantum for 10 years. From the beginning, he has been an unusual Chef in that he is very low key and easy going, and his kitchen reflects his personality. There is no yelling or throwing of food, knives, or anything else like there is in so many kitchens. Instead, kitchen employees are expected to work hard but be respectful to each other as well as other Nonantum employees. Steve is always happy to lend a hand when life gets crazy. Last summer, one night we were having a Grand Opening of our new dining room and somehow no one was scheduled to pass hors d’oeuvres. Steve casually picked up a tray and started passing goodies among our gathered guests. He did so with a smile, and said it gave him a great excuse to talk about his food to everyone in the room.
Steve is also a great contributor to his community. Every winter he donates time to a program known as Cooking Matters. In this program he goes in to school and shows kids (he has worked with kids as young as 8) how to cook nutritious food that is not expensive, easy to make and yummy to eat. He also assists the Chef and Cooks at Southern Maine Community College in training the Maine Chefs of tomorrow.
When not at work or volunteering in the community, Steve can often be seen riding his motorcycle all around the countryside. He is married to Tina True and is the proud dad of three young men (all of whom have worked at The Nonantum) and the very proud grandfather of Cameron (who will be gaining a sister very soon!)
Steve True is a wonderful chef, a giving member of his community and a great family man. The Nonantum is extremely proud to have him as a member of our team!
